If your classes don't need state, don't add state. Make OOP work for you, not the other way around. I would probably use static methods in your example.
Create a Salad class that models the output of SaladMaker. See if that helps with return values.

In this case, "make OO work for you" would imply "work around OO" or "do not use OO for this". Which may well be the correct answer.
I intentionally did not do that to make it similar in spirit to the original code, but that would indeed be better.
