Most people are optimizing for speed — learn the tools, ship faster, automate more. But speed is table stakes now. What's actually scarce is judgment about what should and shouldn't happen, and the ability to build systems that enforce that judgment reliably.
The engineers I've seen stay irreplaceable aren't the fastest coders. They're the ones who deeply understand the consequences of what they're building — who ask "what happens when this goes wrong" before it does.
