Talking about the future of web monetization for writers would be synonymous to talking about the future of revenue generation on the web. The number of content creators, most especially writers would continue to increase. And the battle on how to generate revenue from writing would always be active. One big problem I believe web monetization solves for writers is that, it allows their contents cross borders. With web monetization, writers no longer have to worry about the continent or country their audience are from, they no longer have to worry that some people in some particular region would not be able to subscribe to their contents. All these is possible because web monetization eliminates the "money conversion barrier" Someone using web monetization in 5 continents away can easily read your contents and you make money from them stress free.

The whole web monetization ecosystem is wide and friendly, and while other providers like Coil might come up in the future, Coil is still leading that space right now.

Beyond Coil Blogs itself a few other writing platforms are experimenting with Web Monetization, Chris Bongers.

There is also a Wordpress plugin for those using that service.

Note: Right now only Coil Blogs and Wordpress (via the plugin) will allow you to create premium bonus 100+20 Content snippets. I would expect that others start adding this soon.

Desigan Chinniah Hey yes, aware, but hashnode/dev.to even use Coil so it's basicly only Coil out there now. Already using Coil btw.

Chris Bongers To be more correct, Hashnode/DEV/Hacker Noon etc implement and use Web Monetization, a proposed W3C standard.

By doing so members of a Web Monetization provider, remunerate adopters of Web Monetization. Today there is a single provider available and that is Coil.

Other providers are highly encouraged and can be stood up by using the foundations of Interledger (protocol) and Web Monetization (web standard). These new providers could adopt other business models (Coil itself is $5 per month).

Programs like Grant for the Web will encourage and support where applicable grantees to create new providers. Others may be venture backed or otherwise.
