Back in the days when computers weren't as powerful, building your own system from Gentoo source made a huge difference in performance. These days with SSDs and multi-core processors, your performance gains will be marginal at best and doesn't make sense considering the amount of effort it is to build from scratch and keeping it maintained.
No matter how good the community is, typically, if something goes wrong, you're mostly on your own figuring out how to fix issues. Could still be fun if you haven't done it before.
