Better go with PHP if you want quick development and deployment. Developing with NodeJs requires a lot of tooling, also deploying and maintaining Nodejs application is another pain.

While development with PHP is pretty straight and deployments are pretty basic, Install Apache and PHP... place the files and its done.

I see. If quick development wasn't a concern would you still recommend PHP? Mainly seeing as PHP trends in the job market looking like they are going down, curious what has a better chance at being future proof ( or at least last longer and be considered modern)

If quick development is not a concern and as you have mentioned about job trends then go with Nodejs without any thought. It's little complex at first as there is lot of tooling , using packages which is very different from how we build applications with php. But, again it's good learning and job market of Node and other javascript frameworks is growing very rapidly.
