Much of the time is in the "details".

If by "like Kahn academy" you mean "a website that can show videos, possibly search then and organized into courses, in modern browsers with 100 visits a day", that's something an experienced person could do in some weeks, I think. Like a proof of concept.

If instead you mean "how long would it have taken one person to make all the features of Kahn academy, just as polished and stable, with quizes and statistics and teacher mode and ..., all with many thousands of visits", then you're suddenly measuring in years.

So really, it's hard to tell...

Hey thanks - it is good to know how and what is realistic when attempting some projects. I have no experience in server management or managing back end or anything of that ilk. Is it the case that if you have a huge amount of visitors per day - then this is a mammoth effort in itself? Way beyond the abilities of 1 person or a small team?

Not necessarily, it just adds another difficulty and area of experience. For some topics it can be hard, like Google search where each server knows its own thing. But for Kahn, the basics will be adding more servers and maintaining that. But many visitors usually also means higher demands on uptime and polish, where the last percent take disproportionate amounts of time.
