I also pop the keys off my laptop keyboard and (after ensuring nothing is loose) clean out any grit, hair, dust etc. Always makes the keyboard feel nice and bouncy new (+ clean!)

I'm always afraid to do that on a MBP in fear of breaking the mechanism. What kind of laptop are you popping the keys off of ?
It's a MPB - just pull gently from the bottom end, then slightly to the left, slightly to the right and it will pop off quite neatly :)
