MySQL and MSSQL are both very capable databases. In case you don't know, Stackoverflow serves many millions of views using SQL Server, Facebook runs on MySQL - last time I checked, they were amongst the top websites in the world with regards to traffic.

try to put 12TB in MySQL and Postgres. I migrated that amount of data to Postgres because MySQL crashed. Postgres could handle it well. This is just one example. +Faceboom is an extreme case because they rewrote the whole engine (InnoDB) to match their scheme.
