If you are planning to learn vim, start with no plugins at all. Just pick a clean vimrc, and put some basic settings. Plugins and such work well when you understand the basics of vim. Also, don't worry about syntax highlighting etc, it will work out of the box.

Plugins: Just follow Amix's vimrc and tweak it to your liking.
