You often get to read how puzzle games like Chess, GO, Sudoku help in keeping you cognitively active, and keep mental diseases like Alzheimer’s at bay. But are there any puzzle games that you believe have increased your programming skills?
I love playing Sudoku, and I think I arrive at logic for different programs quite intuitively, thanks to it. What puzzle games, books, activities do you think have contributed to an increment in your programming ability?
Definitely griddlers, It made me think in a conditonal way similar to programming. and i dunno maybe The Settlers of Catan - great strategy game, made me feel smarter :P
I don't know if any games have led to me being better about programming, other than thinking about how I'd program them, but I do feel like puzzles and brain training games are a good way to prime the brain for programming you know?
Think or it like a sponge to wipe away the thoughts polluting your brain's chalk board so to speak. Like if something is bother me or I feel stressed out, it's hard to focus on programming, but games like the Nintendo Brain Age training games, or Minecraft, Tetris, or even the Professor Layton games are have a knack for making me forget about everything else and focus. Granted, I need to remember to stop playing at some point, so a timer helps. Sometimes it even gives me ideas while I'm playing.

This is a chicken-and-egg scenario. Do puzzle games keep your cognitive abilities sharp? Or does programming? I figure that for most people, it's the puzzle games, because they're NOT programmers. But for us, programming is just as effective. I'm solving puzzles all day long, and my mind has a hard time winding down at night.
As for puzzle games, though, I prefer brain teasers. And, I like to take IQ tests just for the fun of it. Oh, and Portal. Definitely Portal.
