There are quite a lot of things I'd like to see changed actually:

Replace the arrow notation (->) for method calls with a dot (.)
Replace the string concatenation (.) with a simple plus sign (+) or perhaps double plus signs (++)
Add return type before method name (public string function getName())
Make all native functions pure to allow for better functional programming
Fix inconsistency like argument order of native functions as @GarnierKristen addressed

Maybe PHP simply isn't meant for me, though I use it on a daily basis for work.

I completely agree with you even tho I wouldn't care much if your 3rd point would be a thing in PHP (as I come from a JS background).

I guess I'd like having the third point because I have a Java background where I found it to be very useful. It's not an absolute must have, but I think it'd be a nice feature.
