If you don't already know ruby check out Learn Ruby the hard way.
After that checkout Michael Hartl's RoR tutorial and Rails guides. Hartl's book is incredibly well presented and walks the reader step by step through absolute basics (installing Rails), to a full fledged application. It is perhaps one of the best resources for learning Rails (free or otherwise). He also meticulously updates it for each new version.
