I voted for startups, but in fact i like all the companies except consultory. I like the "plain" organization and all you have to do can do without the risk at someone lokk at you bad or feeling bad about you. I like share knowledge and new ideas to implement, and valorate having a boss with an openmind too.
so far I've only worked at small companies. In my experience you get a lot of flexibility but you also have to wear a lot of hats.
Be knowledgable about design, development, SEO, marketing, handling clients. Constantly be on call for any emergencies, holiday cover can be an issue.
In the company I work for this is the first year in 7 years that I'll be on holiday and not feel like I have to constantly check my emails. (I was on my own until recently)
Whilst not all companies will be like this, if I were to leave I think I'd go to a medium sized company. More chances of being able to specialise.
Would say depend on an individual, some people will agree with me some not. This is my opinion.
I believe small companies are more flexible than MNCs. It is a great place to learn new things, step up when needed. You have the opportunities to play different roles, unlike huge companies where you have a monotonous job to do.
I would prefer a start-up bcoz you get to be your boss in a start-up, and it is a family building something. Hence, the feel of working and going to office is fun. Considering that your spent most of your day in office, the atmosphere there should be fun. If the team is fun, size of the company doesn't matter to me.
Personally speaking, with any new venture in life, I always try to ask myself the question if I identify with the underlying cause of the work which I would get to do. The "what" part of the equation is always secondary. If I am not excited with the reason behind the "why" part of the work, then I am sure — however fancy you might have the description spun out — I could never be as excited with the "what" part of it.
At Hashnode, the "why" boils down to this simple cause: "Empowering everyone in the community to help each other to become better." ... And that excites the hell out of me.
A strong cause which you can identify with, (and an awesome team) will always keep you glued, during the bad days; and makes the ride all that more exhilarating, during the good. Now, you generally get all that in a startup, and hence my answer; that's not to say you can't find your cause in a "large" company.
Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.

My personal opinion is that if you're starting your career then you should try to go for a mid to big company... why? Because they will give you a lot of xp and knowledge in working with big companies and your portfolio will impress everyone. Then, when you have the xp, try to find a startup were you could lead, learn and grow in other areas that way you'll aport a lot more to the startup.
