What is the best way to prepare for a major build? Which build tools do you prefer and why? If other, please explain which tools and why not any of the ones mentioned?

don't mind :) dont forget bamboo, the github infrastructur, teamcity as well as custom build scripts ... whatever floats your boat is my opinion :)
