Looking for a useful SDK to fiddle around with NFC technology (hardware kit + software kit). Any suggestions?

I do not mind any proprietary toolkit out there on the market like NXP's MIFARE or others but I was wondering if there could be a sort of DIY type set for enthusiasts and professionals alike to play with.
