Why was LISP so popular? Is LISP still used anywhere for production level software?

A few years ago; I happened at this book called The Land of LISP; and from what I have read, programmers are really passionate about LISP as a language. What are the reasons for this? And if all the reasons are valid, why don't we see it as commonly anywhere these days?
