It's true, people need to show their work, and they need to work towards having worked on a production system.

Work up the complexity ladder:

Tutorials
Side projects
Joint projects
Open source projects
Freelancing paid projects
Production codebases

Something like that. Depends on the projects of course. Some open-source projects may be more complex than a production codebase.

Each of those rungs can be more complex than the rest, though.

Don't stick to tutorials and expect to be able to make the leap to a 10-year-old codebase. You can do it certainly, but having practice reading other peoples' code can help make it a more seamless transition.

This is such a significant value add! My biggest struggle as a newly hired dev and why people look for others with experience is due to managing a more extensive codebase.

Following the breadcrumbs to a feature you need to add, fix or edit can be difficult.

This is why you have to build. You know your code, but someone else’s…especially when it isn’t clean, can be challenging. It all starts with the fundamentals, guys!
