MCP can be useful. For example for Lemma, a programming language for business rules, I decided against skill files because of the user’s context window. Lemma has many features and use cases, so with the MCP tool “guide” and a “topics” argument, agents can selectively learn about them.

Another argument for MCP is software updates. When a new version of Lemma is released, users won’t need to take any action. The updated agent guides are part of the shipped binary, and are thus kept perfectly in sync.

Finally the MCP server enforces certain workflows for agents, when working with Lemma, that we see as best practice. With a skill file the agent may choose to opt-out in some cases, while with MCP, if they use it…, the process is controlled.
