A useful point here is that the “modern gateway” model itself is starting to broaden. Not every checkout needs to follow the traditional card gateway → processor → card network path. Pay-by-bank/open-banking flows can move customers from checkout directly into their bank for authentication and payment, which changes the integration, fee and reconciliation model developers need to think about. Worth considering alongside cards when designing the payment layer rather than treating the gateway architecture as fixed.
