Great article Marcin. I was also planning to use Protractor, then I found out it will be discontinued from 2023. I recently wrote an article about choosing an E2E automation framework that might be interesting for you: mszeles.com/selenium-or-selenide In the end, our team choose Selenide which is a framework built on top of Selenium Webdriver with many pretty cool extra features. I will continue the article by introducing the use of Selenide with many practical examples. If it is not too late, I would highly recommend considering it as an option.

I've limited myself to JS-only solutions, but I'm sure there are great selenium wrappers in Java, Ruby, etc. While picking, I would definitively focus on languages that the team is already familiar with - so as you wrote in mszeles.com/selenium-or-selenide, for your team Java-based approach sounds like a good idea.
