I use three ways primarily:

SEO tools, to find keywords from posts from users that use competitors apps. This took me to these users' profiles.
a bit more advanced Google and Twitter search to find users that are looking for alternatives of these tools, and
I set a F5bot reminders to get notification every-time someone mentions a competitors app on Reddit or HN.
