Timely post! I followed your steps. However, GSC is unable to read the sitemap. It says:
"Sitemap could not be read. General HTTP error"

Would appreciate your advise here.
Some background info -- I bought my *.dev domain from Google Domains. So, when I added the property: harshahegde.dev, it said: "Auto Verified."
Also, I have set up an 'A' record for my domain.
