Do we just add/subtract balances? - Part 1

My first payments engine, or everyone out here, was calculating the total price of carrots to be paid by Bob to Alice, in 4th grade, by doing addition and subtraction of balances. And Voila! Bob paid Alice. End of Transaction. Almost 2 decades later...
