Few things here:

you dont have to cd into each dir to list its content. You an just do ls straight away.
dont have to logout and back in; you just reload users env, thats it. No need to do session manipulation.

Wojtek X I don't agree with you. Everything can't be reloaded using source .bashrc or .zshrc, source .bashrc will reload the envs without closing the terminal.

But Sometimes it needs to log out to get an effect such as showing app icons (vary with system to system)

Avijit Biswas You do not use 'source .bashrc' in GUI version of 'terminal'/to handle user sessions; there are other tools dedicated for this. Sourcing is typical for server enviroment. Here it fits perfectly.
