It is probably because of the firewall. You can try a VPN and set a proxy, such as

import geemap geemap.set_proxy(port=your-vpn-portnumber) Map = geemap.Map() Map

Google Earth Engine is a cloud computing platform, which is very different from gdal. For dealing with large-scale geospatial datasets, GEE is definitely much faster.
