I've read the advice to put yarn.lock under version control; for it helps to maintain the same structure of node_modules for every system. npm has shrinkwrap, how would you say is it different from yarn.lock?

I agree, there is a lot of boilerplate content out there, and nobody's investing time in building their own "algorithmic" solutions ... but that is how it should be, no? Why move away from what has been tried and tested. If you can, can you expand upon what you find wrong with this practice?

Yes, I would say so. Homebrew is a must for any developer working on a Mac. Additionally you can use this tool to turn your system into a superheroic web development machine by installing all the necessary tools and packages.
