@chuoke you can find many packages for face detection with PHP/JavaScript and do it on your side.

I would recommend always doing image manipulations with JS on client-side. For example, when user uploads a large images in a form, I have a simple JS which automatically resizes image from 8mb to 400kb in dimensions I need. Back-end should only store files in any local storage or cloud and do a simple validation when required. With this approach you also sending to a server much smaller size of data, and server shouldn't waste time for additioanal processing, so you gain maximum request-response time.
