Yep, I'm 100% location independent. I have been in 6-7 countries this year all over the world and the work travels with me not the other way around
Really nice, have you used sites like Upwork.com to get work? or do you have a different strategy?
I have tried, and I have abondoned them. Depending where in the world you live and what salary you are used to, it might work. But for a Dane the salaries are incredible low :-) I have partnered with a colleague in Denmark who can do business and I deliver the work. I try to network through friends and network. Occasionally I have to travel to Denmark to have a meeting, but a lot of people are satisfied with Skype meetings. It's not easy, it takes hard work and especially building up a useful network requires time. I have been working on it for almost a year now and it hasn't paid me much more than my needed expenses, well anyway, also I have decided a lifestyle that doesn't give me large monthly bills, at least until my economy is capable of it. When time allows me I will play around with affiliate sites to see if I can add up some bits on completely independent work.
The important thing is to set your goal and be focused. My goal is to be location independent and enough money to not make a budget, not to become wealthy rich with a huge mansion - I can always escape to luxerious places with AirBNB for a few days :-)
Thanks for sharing @emilmoe. I have heard that some people start by moving to a super cheap city like Chiang Mai and that allows them to live well with low income while their build their network, reputation or whatever, so that makes sense. The goal I'm focusing on right now is to upgrade my front-end skills, thanks for your advise on that!
Well.. Chiang Mai isn't that cheap :-) I have been living 7 months in Phnom Penh in Cambodia, that allowed me to live cheap, even without considering my expenses so much. Also the north of Thailand can get chill in the winter time.
If you have any questions about living abroad in South East Asia you are also welcome to contact me about that. I have experience from both Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam :-)
