Syed Fazle Rahman Seems to me it's a matter of distancing themselves from the Java ecosystem, which gave them headaches with that whole Oracle legal nonsense a while back. Could also be that they wanted their system under a different license from Linux. Seems they went with BSD-3 instead of GPLv2. I'm not a lawyer though, so not sure what that entails.

At the end of the day, I hope it comes to fruition. More options seems like a good thing I think. I'm not sure if the android ecosystem is solidified to the point of resistance to change though. Maybe they're betting on web apps and ASM over native apps.
