Because that's been invalid markup since 1997 since those quotes are no longer optional, and if they EVER get around to bothering to implement the rules properly your code could just up and stop working altogether?

Much less how it makes XML parsing and server-side handling a pain in the ass? (see PHP's DOMDocument).

Just saying, only now noticed I'm two years late to this party -- odd it was linked on the main page.

There are three valid ways an attribute value can be parsed in HTML:

unquoted
"double quoted"
'single quoted'

And they each have a different list of invalid characters they cannot contain: html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/syntax.html
