If you've just created the droplet and haven't uploaded any code and basic stuff doesn't work; I would just delete the droplet and re-create it. Sounds like something is wrong with their image. I feel trying to fix it will just cause more headaches.
I'd probably choose a different droplet or version.
Or contact them and see if they can look at the image; maybe something is wrong with it.
