I just created a fresh droplet, but surprisingly I am not able to run basic commands on Ubuntu 14.04. For example, when I type history it says command not found. But some other commands like node, 'npm' etc work.
What could be the reason?

I recently got a basic droplet(10 days ago) on DigitalOcean with Ubuntu 15.10 and it's working properly. Try different version.

If you've just created the droplet and haven't uploaded any code and basic stuff doesn't work; I would just delete the droplet and re-create it. Sounds like something is wrong with their image. I feel trying to fix it will just cause more headaches.
I'd probably choose a different droplet or version.
Or contact them and see if they can look at the image; maybe something is wrong with it.
