haha, my setup is outdated and suboptimal. I do a lot of different things, and I am a builder, so here's my setup in detail:
What I do
- WebApp Dev (TS)
- WebServer Dev (TS / Rust)
- GameDev (Rust)
- IoT Dev (C / Rust)
- Content Creation (2D/3D)
- Gaming 😝
- Music and home cinema
As you can see, I am in need of a performance system. Especially compiling stuff and gaming need CPU and GPU, however a fast storage is also gold. As someone who always listens to music, I also need some good audio setup, or I go crazy.
Current Setup
- Core i5 Ivy Bridge 3570K, OCed to 4.2GHz on air
- on a AsRock P67 FATAL1TY Performance motherboard
- with 16GB GeIL Black Dragon RAM (4x4GB DDR3-1600)
- rendering on a MSI GTX 970 Gaming 4G
- with Asus Xonar D2
- and a SATA3 500GB Samsung PRO 850
- and a SATA2 1TB 7200U Hitachi drive
- powered by an OCZ FATAL1TY 750W PSU
- running mainly Windows 10 x64
- in an Antec Lanboy Air tower (yellow)
plus
- some self-assembled NAS I got as a gift from my father (don't know the specs, though, it just works™)
- running ESXi
- with guest OmniOS and Napp-It for ZFS storage
- driving 4x1TB 7200U disks for 2TB Z1 storage, and 2x1TB disks for ESXi and other guest servers
- and guest Debian as application server
It's outdated (most stuff from 2011/2012), partly broken (only one SATA3 jack working, CPU does not work without OC anymore, etc.) and I am lacking some things, like a PCIe x4 slot for my NVMe adapter card. The NAS has some severe performance problems since I had to change its PSU, and I really should take some time to update and fix it.
What I want
- Ryzen 7 3700X or Threadripper 3920X
- on a AsRock X570 Taichi Ultimate or AsRock Fatal1ty X499 Professional Gaming
- with 32GB DDR4-3000+ RAM
- rendering on AMD Navi
- prolly with Creative Soundblaster Z
- using my Samsung EVO 960 (M.2) 1TB
- and a 2TB+ NVMe
- running mainly Gentoo Linux x64
Obviously, I want to keep the NAS, though I might want to upgrade its capacity and add an encrypted online backup for the very very important things. Maybe add 10G ethernet and a direct connection to my desktop (it's 1G via router at the moment). On the desktop side, though, I need an entirely new machine. I think, even though there weren't any major developments in the past few years, especially Ryzen will be a nice upgrade and the whole setup offers many small improvements (more cores, SATA3 -> M.2, more and faster RAM, etc.), so I guess 2019 should really be the year I upgrade. I have been waiting long enough haha
I also want to get a VR headset, because that's one of the features I want to support in my game(s), but my PC comes first.
My Desktop
- 2 FullHD monitors, my third one broke. I need one for the code, one for the browser and one for the debugger, ideally more, though, for docs, communication tools and other stuff. I prefer the big ones, though (30"+)
- Razer DeathStalker Ultimate - worst keyboard ever, don't buy (because of support)
- Razer Naga 2012 with 12 thumb buttons, which are not only nice for MMOs
- Sony Dolby Digital Surround AVR, driving my JBL (small/front), Yamaha (center), Jamo (SW) and Nubert (midi/surround) speakers plus my Razer BlackShark headset (via 6,35mm jack)
- Logitech C930e Webcam for talking to clients and friends
- Leap Motion, because I backed it on Kickstarter and now it's a playtoy I hope to put on a VR headset someday
I love to have lots of screen estate and some quality equipment laying around. Even though not every investment was a good one, this is what keeps me productive at home, and which I sometimes use with my work laptop. Imho, a good working environment is very important to be productive.
My software environment
- KDE Plasma, modern and out-of-the-way DE
- JetBrains CLion and WebStorm, they are the best imho and support integrated Rust debugging
- Firefox, because FF is really good and Alphabet is too powerful
- LibreOffice, it's awesome and all that I need. Why should I pay MS for services I can get for free and libre?
- Krita for 2D art and photo manipulation, though I am also eyeing Serif Affinity. They are easy to use and free/cheap. I am not a professional artist or designer. I need tools I can work with sans putting months of learning into.
- Kate as simple text editor
- Blender for 3D art. Free, fast, and can do anything I need
- Dust3D for 3D placeholders. It's simple to use and fast to work with
- KeePass as password manager. It's offline on all platforms, which is my most important factor, and has auto-type
- Slack for professional stuff and Hashnode
- Discord for private stuff and communication to some projects (Gentoo, Amethyst, etc.)
- Spotify, because I need music!
- Chocolatey as Windows package manager, updating all software on startup. I am always surprised at just how many packages I have, and I am glad that I automated all updates
