How this would have affected the tech statups, individual developers and engineers working at big IT firms?
Development would be slow. And code would be more secretive. Learning would be more complicated. Fewer people would be programmers. Certainly may not exist now.

it would be slow, I guess most companies between 1998 and now use open source as building block.
just without linux the costs would go up a lot...
I don't wanna live in a mac and windows world where we only use internet explorer and maybe lotus notes .... which is extreme .... still the thought alone makes me shiver ...
