Back in the day, ActiveX was Microsoft's alternative to Javascript. Specific to Internet Explorer obviously, it was pretty powerful and robust.

Technically, Flash is an alternative to Javascript as well but clearly, that's on it's way out.

Javascript will too be replaced one day; just happens now it's what's popular.

Well, ActiveX is Microsoft-based and Flash is an Adobe product. Afaik, JavaScript has no ties to a single company, hence it might stay with us very long, and surely not "just" because it is popular (I don't even think it is that much... a great percentage of developers still rants about how bad JS really is)

99% of programming languages are specific to their creators, no? PHP, Go, Ruby, Python, C#, Swift, etc... Some (most) are open source and have contributors, but they all originated with from a person or a companies idea of what a language needs to do and why.

Yesterday, AJS was popular. Today, it's React. Tomorrow, its ??? Those are frameworks for sure, but as with anything else, something new and better will come out; it's just a matter of time.
