Heheheh you nail it: It's all about measure. For my part, I found myself at best when I achieved to maintain a good balance in : P roducing/practicing something (code, article, configured software) A quiring knowledge R eordering/cleaning things (data, my desk...) D étente (Yeah Netflix is ok ;-p ) O ptimizing thing (making something better, faster, cleaner) N etworking (meeting people, creating social and emotional links) Sorry for the cheesy accronym, but it helps me remember all the vital aspect I don't want to neglect, and if it seems a little bit "hair-pulled" it's because it comes from French words and I had to find a matching translation in english.
There use many forms of meditation, choose the one that suits you best. Here are some: Breath deeply without pushing your limits, just focus on the air flowing in and out, when thoughts arrive acknowledge them and get back to your breathing feelings. Observe your thoughts. Observe every thought poping out in you mind ("My back is hurting", "I must remember to buy xxxx", "Damn my thoughts are out of control"...) let them just appear and observe them without judgement. Empty your mind, kill every thought appearing with a smiling "yes" and get back to an empty mind. 10 minutes everyday (consistency is key) will be fine. And remember, that there's no "failure" of any kind, just do it. After few weeks you should notice some changes.
1) I try to stay crystal clear about what matters to me, so I know what are my objectives and what I have to do to reach them. Every (in)action is measured based on my objectives. When I procrastinate or waste my time, I know it. I keep on remembering it's all up to me, either I do what I have to reach my goal or I don't, faking it won't make it. 2) I want to ease people life make them more happy. Writing software tools is a way to me to do it, and improving myself is another one (for several reason, but it's another story...) Why? I honestly don't know :-)
According to Dunning Kruger that's rather a good thing 😉 I've been programming for more than 30 years and I still feeling this impostor syndrome sometimes. But let me tell you: This doubt is what will make you better (it's a powerful reason to improve) Every time you doubt, remember every past little victory and dare And YES! you're a real programmer! (as long as you commit to be)
