Hello everyone! Connor here from matix.io, where I spend my days developing software.
I'm new to this community and just trying to get an idea of what sort of developers are here.. so: how long have you been coding?
Looking forward to seeing how this poll goes!
I wrote my first program in the Fall of 1969 - a prime number generator using Fortran on an IBM 360 model 40. I have been programming ever since. These days I build multi-device and multi-tier applications for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and cloud architectures.
I used to be a manager, but I didn't like that job much. Also I wanted to work from home and have flex-time working hours, so I decided to change the occupation and started learning coding several months ago. I hope I'll be able not only to have enough free time, but also to earn enough money.
I started learning how to code in 1997. I was just getting ready to graduate from high school and didn't really know what I wanted to do with my life. One of my uncles told me to learn how to write code because it was the future. "Don't learn how to use a tool like Dreamweaver, learn how to write the code behind it. It's the future!" Dreamweaver was brand new and everyone was excited about it. I still remember it like it was yesterday. It ended up being great advice! :)
I remember my first line of basic (and DR-dos configs) something like 28 years ago-ish, but it only become a real important part of my life (and my job) 18 years ago. I learnt so much over that period of time... and I still have so much to learn! And thatβs what makes this activity so exciting! ;-)
I wrote my first lines of code 18 years ago, but for much of it, it was maybe 2-3 hours a week.
So saying I've been coding for 18 years makes me sound more experienced than I am (and older than I'd like to be).
I've only been getting paid for full time coding for 2 years.
Welcome to Hashnode, Connor! I've been coding professionally for close to 4 years, starting 2015. I've been into programming since high school and I've built a few websites in college, programming embedded systems for a few months. Counting all those I'd give myself an extra 2 - 3 years. So totally about 7 years. How about you? How long have you been coding?
Professionally since 1996. Hobby coding since '86.
Nice to meet you, Connor.
I go back to the Bulletin Board System days, creating "doors" (or, at that time, "games" that were integrated into the BBS - much like what Facebook does today) as well as small scripts for the chat rooms.
Since then, it's been "full steam ahead" since about 1998 - with an ongoing interest in gaming and how to merge and adapt tangible design techniques into interactive online properties.
Welcome Connor,
from this moment onward, you shall be one of us!
I learned coding ca. ~10 years ago, however I've only been coding for ca. ~5 years professionally. There are people with far more experience here, so I love Hashnode for the exchange!
Welcome to Hashnode Connor! How are you doing?
I have been programming professionally since 2013 - so that will be 6 years for me. What about you?
